Eye-hand coupling before saccadic eye movement

چکیده
We examined the nature of eye-hand coupling for the fast correction of on-going arm reaching movements in response to an abrupt target jump. We found a significant correlation between the onset times of eye and arm responses. Importantly, the initial component of the reaching correction was affected by a saccade occurrence even though the onset of reaching correction was prior to the saccade onset. This result would exclude the possibility of causal effect of eye movement execution on the arm response initiation, and instead support the idea of a shared neural mechanism for the preparation (or modulation) processes of saccades and reaching corrections. Coordinated control of eye and hand movements in dynamic reaching.
In the present study, we integrated two recent, at first sight contradictory findings regarding the question whether saccadic eye movements can be generated to a newly presented target during an ongoing hand movement. Saccades were measured during so-called adaptive and sustained pointing conditions. In the adapted pointing condition, subjects had to direct both their gaze and arm movements to ...
متن کاملCoordinated flexibility: how initial gaze position modulates eye-hand coordination and reaching.
Reaching to targets in space requires the coordination of eye and hand movements. In two experiments, we recorded eye and hand kinematics to examine the role of gaze position at target onset on eye-hand coordination and reaching performance. Experiment 1 showed that with eyes and hand aligned on the same peripheral start location, time lags between eye and hand onsets were small and initiation ...
متن کاملTMS pulses on the frontal eye fields break coupling between visuospatial attention and eye movements.
While preparing a saccadic eye movement, visual processing of the saccade goal is prioritized. Here, we provide evidence that the frontal eye fields (FEFs) are responsible for this coupling between eye movements and shifts of visuospatial attention. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-guided transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was applied to the FEFs 30 ms before a discrimination t...

Scanning of the visual scene is an important selective process in visual perception. In this article we argue that eye-movement data provide an excellent on-line indication of the cognitive processes underlying visual search and reading. We outline some recent advances from physiological investigations of saccadic eye-movement control before focusing on eye-movement behaviour in visual search a...
متن کاملChanges in orientation discrimination at the time of saccadic eye movements
Perceptual performance has been known to change around the time of saccadic eye movement. In the current study, we measured the accuracy and sensitivity of orientation discrimination of bar stimuli presented during fixation and before saccadic eye movements. Human participants compared the orientations of the test and reference bar stimuli with the head erect in a two-interval forced choice tas...
